Installing Kitchen Cabinets to the Ceiling or Leave a Space

Installing_Kitchen_Cabinets_to_the_Ceiling_or_Leave_a_Space.jpgMaking the decision to install kitchen cabinets to the ceiling or to leave a space is an important decision. Here are a three points to consider when making your decision.

1.     The height of your ceiling

Whether you will have enough room to leave a space above your kitchen cabinets is dependent upon the height of your ceiling. The industry standard is 19 ½” between your ceiling and kitchen cabinets. For example, installing 30” wall cabinets, you will need a minimum of 84” in height.

2.     Shape of the ceiling

In most kitchens, there is generally a variance in height. Regardless of the ceiling conditions, your installer should accurately measure the space to prevent empty space. This is useful as it can help hide any imperfections in the ceiling.

3.     Trim

Even if your ceilings are level, it’s not uncommon for people to use trim to add to the detail of your kitchen. Depending on whether it is attached to frame or the cabinets, it will impact your cabinet installation.
